Americans Contend that They Still Believe in Higher Education’s Public Good
Survey finds that the American public still recognizes the value of higher education.
A new survey shows that the American public still recognizes the value of higher education and supports government funding of higher education opportunities. The study was designed to evaluate Americans’ perceptions of how higher education institutions contribute to society, beyond individual gains.
When 3,000 adults were asked whether public spending on higher education was an “excellent,” “good,” “fair,” or “not good” investment, most responded positively. 44% said public funding of higher education was excellent and 32% said good. Additionally, the survey asked respondents to indicate whether they would like to see more or less government spending in a range of educational realms, reminding them that higher spending might require tax increases. About half of the respondents said that they still supported increased spending.
The study also went on the evaluate how the public perceived the returns of higher education. While recent discourse has focused more on individual returns from higher education, respondents still indicated their belief that “there are larger benefits to the public.” For instance, around 70% of respondents felt that higher education produces “scientific advances that benefit American society,” supports “graduates’ personal enrichment and growth,” aides “America’s national prosperity and development,” and increases “graduates’ wealth and success.”
However, respondents also indicated that colleges could be doing more in other areas as well. For instance, a majority said that colleges need to do more when it comes to enhancing the civic participation of graduates.
