Trump Administration Suggests Combining the U.S. Departments of Education and Labor
Learn about the presidential proposal to combine the Department of Education and the Department of Labor.
In June, it was reported that the Trump Administration proposed a merger to combine the Department of Education and the Department of Labor. This plan is in-line with Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’s view that the higher education system required some major changes. Last year, DeVos held a council focused on the significance of local businesses working with institutions of higher education. DeVos argued that curriculums should be adjusted to better fit the needs of the workplace.
The Department of Labor and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) recently set up a task force to work on expanding apprenticeship programs within the sphere of higher education. To accomplish this goal, the Department of Labor has organized a memorandum of understanding with the AACC, strengthening its partnership with community colleges and reinforcing its commitment to growing apprenticeship opportunities.
In regards to officially combining the two federal departments, this change is unlikely. The change would require congressional approval which is unlikely during an election year.
