What Faculty-Pay Survey Reveals About Academic Jobs
Important things learned from the American Association of University Professors’ faculty-compensation survey.
Every year, the American Association of University Professors releases a faculty-pay survey that offers insight into the salary of full-time and part-time faculty members. Curious to see what this year’s survey revealed? Here are some of the important things learned from the American Association of University Professors’ faculty-compensation survey.
- Inflation Hurts
For the 2018-2019 academic year, full-time faculty members earned about 2% more than they did the year before. However, as the cost of living increased by about 1.9%, this raise was pretty much eroded by the effects of inflation.
- Part-Time Faculty Salaries Vary Widely
This year, the American Association of University Professors asked institutions to report salary information on part-time faculty members. The national average pay per course for part-time faculty was $3,894. However, between the 330 higher education institutions that responded, the pay varied by thousands of dollars. The major differences show how institutions value certain disciplines, experience levels, market forces, and qualifications.
- Gender Equity is Still an Issue
While women are overrepresented at the assistant professor rank, they are underrepresented at higher levels in academia. For instance, at the associate professor level, women were 12% compared to 14% of males. At the full-professor rank, women were at 10% while men were at 21%. The survey also showed that across every type of higher education institution, men earned more than women who held the same position.
